Defensive driving means expecting the unexpected. Instead of assuming other drivers will do the right thing, you plan for what they might do wrong and leave yourself room to react. These habits protect you on every road, from quiet neighborhoods to the freeway.

Keep a Safe Following Distance

Use the three-second rule. When the car ahead passes a fixed point, count how long it takes you to reach the same point. If it is less than three seconds, back off. Add more time in rain, fog, or heavy traffic.

Scan, Do Not Stare

Look far down the road, not just at the bumper in front of you. Check your mirrors every few seconds and glance at side streets, driveways, and parked cars. The earlier you spot a hazard, the more time you have to respond.

Recognize Hazards Early

Watch for clues that something is about to happen: brake lights several cars ahead, a ball rolling into the street, a car door opening, or a driver drifting in their lane. Each clue is a reason to ease off the gas and cover the brake.

Assess the Risk and Have an Escape Route

Avoid driving in other vehicles’ blind spots, and try to keep open space on at least one side of your car. If someone stops suddenly or merges into your lane, you will have somewhere to go.

Manage Distractions

Put your phone away before you start the car. Set your navigation and music while parked. California law prohibits holding a phone while driving, and even hands-free use takes attention away from the road.

Practice Collision Avoidance

Smooth braking, controlled steering, and knowing when to slow down instead of swerving are skills that improve with guided practice. Our defensive driving lessons cover hazard recognition, risk assessment, following distance, scanning, and collision avoidance in real traffic.
