Bill C Licensed Driving Instructor - driving lessons in San Francisco

Many of our students already know how to drive. They learned in the UK, India, Europe, or elsewhere, and now they need a California license. Driving experience is a big advantage, but U.S. rules and road-test expectations are different in a few important ways.

Right-Side Driving and Turns

If you learned to drive on the left, the biggest change is turning. Left turns cross traffic, and right turns are short. Practice finishing each turn in the correct lane until it feels automatic.

Right Turn on Red

In California you may turn right on a red light after coming to a complete stop, unless a sign prohibits it. You must yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic first. Examiners watch closely for a full stop.

Four-Way Stops

All-way stop intersections are common here and rare in many countries. The first car to stop goes first. If two cars arrive together, the car on the right goes first.

Pedestrians and Crosswalks

Pedestrians have the right of way at marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections. Stop and wait until they are safely out of your path.

School Zones and School Buses

Slow down in school zones when children are present, and stop for a school bus with flashing red lights unless you are on the other side of a divided road.

Learn What Examiners Expect

Habits that are fine in daily driving, like a rolling stop or a quick mirror check without a head turn, can cost points on the test. A few lessons focused on the California test standard help experienced drivers adjust quickly. Several of our international students have passed on their first attempt after only a handful of lessons.
